Transport4schools,

About the Project

Transport 4 Schools has been set up to make it easier to get your children to school

We have been working with the Council and the schools for two years with the aim of solving the traffic and pollution problems cause by the school run.

Camden Council will support this project by supplying the schools with legal parking bays for the school buses.

Transport 4 Schools has taken into consideration the following important points:

  • Children's safety
  • Time spent on the bus:
We have tested the routes to limit the journey to a maximum of 40 to 45 minutes.
  • Pick up points:
The children do not have to walk too far
  • Price: A big concern, especially for the parents with more than one child.
  • Siblings travelling together to differing schools

We have been working hard to ensure that all these points are taken into account so that we end up with a good quality service which suits the people involved.

So far we are not including state schools, as from the results of the surveys carried out at 13 primaries in the area, they do not have enough parents interested in paying for the bus.

"Hampstead and Belsize Park are unique in having such a high concentration of Prep. Schools in a small geographical area.

It follows that targeting these schools first, with a bus network, we will create a significant reduction in traffic, congestion and pollution to the benefit of all"

Marta Baschwitz, Project Director

The Impact of this project

Camden has some of the poorest air quality levels in London and the whole borough has been declared an Air Quality Management Area. The major sources are cars, lorries, buses and industry.

The impact in the environment will be enormous:

  • The community will benefit by the reduction of traffic congestion during rush hours.
  • Reducing the congestion will help us move towards a better environment by reducing pollution and improve local air quality.
  • Schools won't have the stress of high numbers of cars driving around and the complaints of the local residents would definitely decrease.
  • Children would travel more safely and would become more independent. They will get some extra fun time with other friends.
